What Is the SeaWorld Rescue Program?

SeaWorld has a dedicated Rescue Team that is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year to respond to wild animals in crisis. Whether the animals in need are stranded, sick, or injured, the SeaWorld team will come to the rescue. This highly motivated team works around the clock, providing care for rescued animals in their rehabilitation program.

What Is the SeaWorld Rescue Team?

Experienced veterinarians and senior animal care experts make up the SeaWorld Rescue Team. Experts in their field, they are experienced in working with a variety of animal species. The Rescue Team, however, can’t do it alone, and seasonal animal care specialists assist them in their rescue and rehabilitation efforts.

How Many Animals Have Been Rescued?

The statistics are astounding. Working in partnership with regional, state, and federal agencies over 50 years, the SeaWorld Rescue Team has assisted more than 30,000 sick, hurt, and abandoned wild animals. Animals that have been assisted by these life-saving experts include 500 cetaceans like dolphins, 7,700 pinnipeds like seals and sea lions, almost 50 otters, more than 2,200 reptiles like sea turtles, almost 20,000 birds, almost 600 manatees, and over 100 other mammals.

Where Do the Rescued Animals Go?

You might be surprised to learn that the goal of the SeaWorld animal rescue program is to rehabilitate each animal successfully and return it to the wild. Once captured, the rescued animals are taken to high-tech animal care centers that are equipped with the best tools, state-of-the-art facilities, and top-notch equipment. These facilities provide some of the best animal care in the world.

What Happens in the Animal Care Center?

When an animal arrives at the animal care center, a veterinarian gives it a number and checks it thoroughly. In the rescue world, no two cases are the same, and the experts customize a treatment plan for each animal. Animal care center staff must be creative. On any given day, they might create nutritional formulas and hand feed baby animals, repair cracked sea turtle shells, create prosthetic beaks for injured birds, or build flotation devices to help marine mammals stay afloat in the pool.

What Tools Are Available at the Animal Care Center?

Animal care centers feature state-of-the-art equipment, ensuring that veterinarians and animal care specialists have everything they need to be successful. Laboratories feature hematology (blood) analyzers, water testing equipment, and a pharmacy stocked with antibiotics, intravenous fluids, medications, and vitamins made just for marine mammals, birds, and fishes. Specialized food preparation areas exist, where a variety of meals are prepared to feed the hungry patients. SeaWorld® equips their care centers with surgical suites and recovery areas.

SeaWorld is Dedicated to Research

Since SeaWorld began more than 50 years ago, research has been a key component of their mission to boost animal conservation efforts. Experts at SeaWorld have published on social media more than 300 scientific studies on topics related to animal care and conservation. Much of the research conducted at SeaWorld directly benefit animals in the wild.

Studying animals in the wild can be very difficult, if not impossible. SeaWorld provides a safe environment for researchers and scientists to study marine mammals and other species that might otherwise go unstudied. This is why the SeaWorld Animal Rescue Team is so important.
